Mystery Memorabilia...

For my first installment of Mystery Memorabilia I bring to you a piece of memorabilia that has been in my collection for a long time. I have not seen another on the market anywhere*. It combines two of my favorite sports- Baseball and Golf**. Does anyone out there know what exactly it is, and how much it might be worth? I have a pretty firm grasp on the fact that it is a decorative plate. Is it a participation trophy? (If so, you would expect it to be personalized.) Is it something one could have purchased at the tournament? (If so, WHY?) Is there a matching set of silverware? Help me out people...

1978 Joe DiMaggio Invitational Pewter*** Plate

It measures about 10-3/4" in diameter. The "JOE DI MAGGIO '78 INVITATIONAL" is recessed. The HALF MOON BAY GOLF LINKS and logo are embossed. It is a heavy bugger, sealed inside thick plastic sheeting. The back has some manufacturing information.

Here is a small booklet sealed inside the plastic wrapper.

This is one of the stamps in the metal on the back of the plate. The other stamps are pretty small, but have the manufacturers name, a logo, and their location (Columbia, PA)

If anyone can help me solve this mystery, I would be eternally grateful****.

Too bad Joe D. and Sam Snead aren't around to help...

This is an actual photo from the '78 Invitational... And is the extent of my research.

* I have looked on eBay periodically for the last few years.
** If you include eating... Three.

What I've Done...

As my postings become fewer and farther between, I feel the need to let all three of you know that I'm keeping myself busy. (Yes, YOU are one of the three. But really this post is just for you.) I've been making custom, vintage-ish baseball/business cards for several people. My day job is keeping me busy during the prime art making hours. After work, I have made a few posters for local shows and a couple of tours.

I'm also trying to pare down my card collection to a slightly more manageable size. So far that has consisted entirely of moving boxes from one spot to another. Occasionally, I've opened up a few of the card storage boxes and flipped through the cards. I owe some cards to people, so it is a little depressing. It isn't the thought of parting with cards that is depressing. I truly enjoy sending packages of baseball cards. The depressing part is that I owe packages of cards to people who either: A) are pissed at me because it has been so long since I should have sent the cards, B) have forgotten because it has been so long since I should have sent the cards, Thirdly) no longer read this blog because it has been so long since I should have sent the cards (that, and I never post anymore), and Last but not least) I forgot where I was going with this...

Did I mention I am easily distracted?

Well, here are a few of the posters I've done recently:

If you have any baseball cards you want, let me know. I'm thinking about only keeping my Padres cards.

EDIT: Oh,yeah! I married the girl of my dreams! Made the Save the Date postcards myself.

Hey, I did something...

I posted a couple cards I made over on The Baseball Card Blog.

Yeah. I know...

You're asking how I can keep up this blogging pace.

The answer: Hibernation.

Side Project...

I apologize to my faithful readers (both of you) for neglecting my blogging duties for so long. I have been focusing on my new job more than I ever thought I would. Despite the new career path, I have had a little free time to devote to a new project. I have been making some new, vintage business cards. I have shown my own here on the blog a couple of months back. After creating these new ones, I really need to make some new ones for myself. I think a few of you baseball card fans may recognize a few of the designs.

Here are some examples:

Thanks for checking back in... I'll try to post more often. Hit me up if you want some business cards. They are pretty cheap.

Oh... Did I mention they come in cool boxes too!

Star Wars: The Retro Card Set...

I went to the movies this afternoon... Yup. Star Wars - The Phantom Menace in 3D. That movie was tough to sit through again, despite the added dimension. It effectively crushed my love of Star Wars. I think this will be my last Star Wars card for a while.

On the bright side, I found Jar Jar Binks slightly less annoying than young Anakin Skywalker this time around. Man, that poor kid couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag. Don't get me wrong, Jar Jar is still annoying as hell...

Sorry It Has Been So Long...

I have been having some ME time: I got engaged to a wonderful woman; I got a new computer; and I finally got a full time job.

It is only a matter of time before my new employers realize my true talents are being wasted...

I'm not sure where making fake baseball cards might fit in at a university registrar's office, but who knows???

One thing for sure, this bad boy is going in my cubicle on Monday morning.
