2008 Allen & Ginter. Mini Set

First off, I L-O-V-E Allen & Ginter. The 2008 set was the first set I made an attempt to complete. With the help of one hobby box, dozens of blasters, and some helpful friends from the blogging community, I was able to finish the set. It looks great in my custom-made binder.

If I do say so myself...

Purchasing so many packs of cards, I have a ton of doubles, triples, etc. I also have a huge stack of the mini cards. They look really cool in the 15 card sleeves I recently bought.

Unfortunately, I don't have as nearly a complete set at I would have hoped...

With the upcoming release of the 2009 Allen & Ginter set, I have made an important decision... I am not going to buy any new cards until I complete the mini set (#1-350). This is where you come in...

Too Ambitious???

Correcting the wrongs from last year's disaster of a set - Upper Deck Documentary:

Photo from actual game (or at least a player in the correct uniform) - CHECK

Photo of player ACTUALLY involved in the outcome of the game - CHECK

Awesome new PunkRockPaint logo - CHECK

This is gonna be a pain... Oh well, it is a labor of love. (I promise the photos will be better cropped in the future.)

EDIT:

Hmmm... I left the score off. (On purpose???)

Too Easy...

Upper Deck lobs one in... and PunkRockPaint fouls it off down into the mud:

That is sooooooo messed up. Let this be a warning to all you new bloggers out there...

Don't take the easy way out. Strive to do your best... Or you could end up like me: a sad, pathetic, attention whore.

I Retract My Previous Post...

These are gross...

... But I am going to have Soooooooo much fun with the design!

May I Please Have One...

From 2009 Upper Deck Series 2

(Dear Upper Deck, I am sorry if I ever said anything bad about you. Thank you for making this card. Please present this card as a "get out of jail free" pass at any point between now and the end of time.)

Patch Card MOJO!!!...

This Memorial Day weekend, I pulled my first two manufactured patch cards from 2009 Topps series 2. I was totally stoked to pull one of the American Icon cards (1:144 packs Hobby only)!

Amazingly enough, I pulled this one only two packs later:

Slightly less desirable... I think I am going to go for the set. Has anyone pulled the "M" or the "R"? I am willing to trade my Chuck Norris autographed boot relic (#97/500) for either one.

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah...

Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius is one of my favorite blogs. I like it ALMOST as much as I like whooping up on Matt's fantasy team. (Oh, yes I did go there!)

A while back, Matt posted a copy of the ridiculously airbrushed/painted Dick Williams 1971 Topps card. I decided to add a little bit to complete the effect...

Couldn't get much better...

Jake Peavy vetoed his trade to the White Sox.

My kickball season starts tonight. (yeah, I said kickball... AC Slumpbusters 4x CHAMPS!!!)

Oh, and THE PADRES TRADED FOR TONY GWYNN, JR.!!!

(Of course, we COULD have claimed him off the waiver wire after spring training... Better late than never.)

Refreshingly beautiful... (Warning Music Content)

While diligently focusing on my duties at work, I found something so wonderful that I needed to share it with the 7.5 readers (based on daily average) of this blog.

Michael Reed is a (former?) member of one of my favorite bands, The Smart Brothers. (They have made their way into a couple of previous posts.) Today, I was lucky to stumble onto his music page. It looks like he is working on an album. Hopefully, it arrives sooner rather than later. The one song that he currently has posted is absolutely beautiful. I listened to it on repeat for the better part of an hour this morning.

Having witnessed Mr. Reed play several instruments at live shows, I was a little disheartened to read that he only played acoustic piano, upright bass, electric bass, drumset, electric guitar, steel string guitar, 12 string guitar, percussion, organ, Rhodes keyboard, Mellotron, MicroKorg synthesizer, banjo, ukulele, and egg shaker on the recording... What? No tuba?!? Come on, Mike! Get with the program...

Big Lebowski Set...

I have been in Vegas since Thursday night. Since they don't have the internet on the casino floor, I have not been able to post anything. Taking the easy way out, I will post a card that I have already made (in fact already posted elsewhere.)

Arriving at work this morning, I was faced with a bit of chaos. Luckily, I still have a job (for a while at least), but some of my friends were not so lucky.
Damn, I need to prepare for the worst. 99.9% of my "art" is on my work computer... Not that I do anything but work at work...

LOST... The Retro Baseball Card Set

Well, this helps explain a little bit from last night...

PRP LOST - #10 Jacob

The previous owner of this card must have really hated the Yankees!

Maybe we can finish this set before season six starts???

Allen & Ginter Update...

With the removal of the Bernie Madoff card from the 2009 Allen & Ginter "World's Biggest Hoaxes, Hoodwinks and Bamboozles" set, Topps has decided how to fill the vacant spot in the checklist...

In related news: The Upper Deck Corporation has rescinded its offer to sponsor the PunkRockPaint Blog.

In more related news: PunkRockPaint is placing the above card up for auction. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Mario Alejandro Lawsuit Relief Fund.

Happy Belated Birthday...

With all my efforts devoted to not forgetting Mothers' Day this year, I totally forgot Tony Gwynn's birthday. Talk about a screw up... How could I forget?!? May 9th is like a national holiday for me... Just between you and me, 5-9-6-0 (May 9th, 1960) was my ATM pin number for years...

Sorry for forgetting, Tony.

And, Mom, I hope you had a great day. Did you get the package Kerri and I sent? I love you, Mom (and Tony too.)

Wishful thinking...

Early Retirement, Here I Come...

While reading through some of my favorite blogs the other day, I stumbled across this gem. It seems that Motherscratcher over at the Achiever Card Blog was doing some ebay-ing. He recently purchased this card:
From the 2003 SP Legendary Cuts set, the card comes from the Historical Impressions subset. I normally get excited when I see a card that I have never seen before, but this one had my mind racing. He described it as an embossed stamp embedded into a card. Wow! What a concept! That is SO cool!

Since I am much smarter than most people, I immediately saw the possiblities. This card could practically print its own money! I had to have it!

I was (amazingly) able to find another auction for one of these cards. They only made 250, so I guess I am blessed. I wanted to make sure I won, so I used the Buy It Now of only $79.99 + $8.00 shipping.

While I waited for the card to arrive, I went out and bought a few boxes of baseballs. I decided that the Official Major League balls were too expensive, so I bought a gross of Wilson Official League Size and Weight baseballs. 144 balls X $2.99 ea. + tax = $468.00.

I also purchased a few stamp pads and ink refills. $19.99 (tax-free). I got them from the scrapbooking lady across the street. She doesn't charge tax. Sweeeeeeet!

I did some extensive research, and found that Tris Speaker autographs go for a pretty good chunk of change. This is gonna be GREAT!!!

My card arrived this morning so I called in sick for work and got working on my retirement plan.

It took a few tries before I got the signatures looking just right.

They turned out really nice- way better than any of the ones I saw on the internet. Since I am smarter than most people, I knew that proper marketing and intelligent bookkeeping would be the keys to maximizing my investment. First I set up a spread sheet outlining my profit potential (figure 1). Then I made some graphs to give my business model a real, authentic look (figure 2). You never know when you might need investors. (I had to steal some cash out of my girlfriend's purse to pay for the baseballs.)
(Fig. 1)

(Fig. 2)

The next steps were writing my ad for Craigslist and then booking my flight to Tahiti!

Here is my advertisement as posted on Craigslist in 39 major markets:

TRIS SPEAKER - HALL OF FAMER!!! - GEM MINT AUTOGRAPH BASEBALL MUST SELL. ONLY $999!!! OBO

GREAT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like everyone in these troubled economic times, I have bills that need to be paid. Unfortunately, I must part with my most treasured piece of memorabilia. This ultra rare autograph from a true hall of famer was a gift to me from my grandfather. On his deathbed he said to me, "I got this ball from Mr. Speaker himself. It is worth over $3,000! Don't sell it... Unless there is another Great Depression and you have to pay bills."

Help me fulfill my grandfathers final wish. Hurry, because this kind of a deal won't last. (Quantity discounts are available.) Photos below.

I am gonna be sooooooooooooo RICH!!! So screw all of you that aren't as smart as me!!!

My Favorite Bands (WILCO)...

At the end of next month WILCO will release their eighth album, titled "Wilco (the album)". I love this band. If you are unfamiliar with their work, I am not going to attempt to categorize their style of music. Okay, maybe I will... Nearest I can describe would be awesomeness piled on top of amazing, with a dash of incredible. As far as I am concerned, Jeff Tweedy could read the phone book and I would trade a Tony Gwynn rookie card for the recording... I may be a little biased.
PRP Favorite Bands - Wilco #NNO

I won't delve too deeply into the band's history (99% of you don't care when I post about music.) They put on an amazing live show. Having seen them live eight times over the course of the last 15 years (wow! 15 years!), I would strongly recommend getting tickets next time they are in your neck of the woods.

My friends, Jake, Dushan and I, had the chance to "hang out" with Jeff Tweedy backstage at a show back in '95. He was playing with a side project, Golden Smog (also amazing), in San Juan Capistrano at a club called The Coach House. After the show, the crowd had thinned out a bit, and Jake said we should head backstage. Dushan and I looked at him like he was crazy. We didn't have passes; we didn't know anyone in the band; we certainly weren't hot chicks.

The "backstage" area at The Coach House was up a flight of stairs to the side of the stage. While Dushan and I were taking turns mocking Jake's idea, Jake nonchalantly walked to the stairs, lifted the rope (ignoring the "no access" sign) and walked up. Well, the two of us left behind had way too much "chalance" and not enough to drink to pull that move off. Our trepitude and our mockery was rewarded when Jake reappeared a few seconds later, followed by a burly security guard. The guard stationed himself at the bottom of the stairs to prevent any further riff-raff from trying to make their way up.

Jake was unfazed. He is never fazed. He is faze-proof, filled with anti-faze. So a few minutes later, when a roadie asked the guard for a hand moving an amp, Jake, once again, headed up the stairs. He motioned for us to follow him, and up we went.

At the top of the stairs was a dimly lit hallway with a half-opened door at the end. Jake pushed the door open slowly and poked his head in. Standing out in the hallway, glancing over my shoulder in fear of angry security personnel, I was pretty nervous. The door now fully opened, Jake says, "Hey, what's up guys?"

Like they were expecting us, Jeff Tweedy warmly invited us in and offers us beers. I was a little awestruck, but Jake and Dushan carried on lengthy conversations with the guys in the band. I am pretty sure I scared Dan Murphy (from Soul Asylum) and Gary Louris (from the Jayhawks) out into the hallway with my slack-jawed awe. Dushan was deep in conversation with the drummer. I am fairly certain that Dushan was impressing the guy with his references to arcane heavy metal bands. Jake was on the other side of the room chatting with Jeff like they were old buddies, so I leaned against the wall within listening distance. Jake asked him when Wilco's second album would be out, and Jeff said that it would be a two-disc album ("Being There" - was released shortly thereafter). I guess I had an incredulous look on my face, 'cause Jeff looked at me and tried to convince me, "No, really - double disc! Okayed by the label and everything."

I was a little embarrassed, so I just made eye contact with my beer for the next couple of minutes. Observently, Jeff asked if I wanted another beer. "No. I'm good," I replied. Not so much as a "Thanks for asking."

As we left, I asked Jeff if he would sign my ticket stub from the show. He obliged, and signed with a ball point pen on the front of the stub. (Autograph Purist Time: I would have prefered a Sharpie, but the auto turned out nicely.) On our way out the door, Gary Louris made his way back inside, and I asked if he would sign the back of the stub. He grabbed a pen off the nearby table and started to sign the back. The pen didn't work very well, so he scribbled for quite a while until the ink began to flow.

The ticket stub is one of my favorite bits of ephemera in my collection: A bold Jeff Tweedy autograph on the front of a Golden Smog ticket stub, with a custom-drawn "tumbleweed" eating Gary Louris' auto on the back.

LOST... The Retro Baseball Card Set

Well... at least the producers knew when to quit. It isn't a great idea to add new "main" characters in the third season. Especially if we are supposed to believe they were there all along.

Am I the only one that loved their final episode? The first flashback scene was spectacular... one of the highlights of Season 3.
